Basic vase design methods and construction techniques:

  • Rose vase arrangement – 6 and 12 stems
  • Mixed flower vase arrangements

Spiral hand-tied technique:

  • Construction of hand-tied mixed flower bouquet
  • Green a vase for a mixed flower arrangement
  • Vase arrangement using a spiral hand-tied bouquet

 

Day 2

  • One-sided, small triangle arrangement in floral foam
  • One-sided, large triangle arrangement in floral foam (sympathy/funeral arrangement)
  • Asymmetrical triangle arrangement in floral foam (centrepiece)

 

Day 3

  • Traditional wiring and taping technique for corsage and boutonniere
  • All-around centrepiece arrangement in floral foam
  • Round bridal bouquet in a fresh floral foam holder

Overview
In this class, you will experience the whole wedding design process, from consultation with your bride to the final presentation of an incredible wedding.  Join Travis Mills and design bouquets, boutonnieres, centrepieces and even an epic installation.  Our final project will be a styled wedding shoot with photos you can use to enhance your own portfolio. Make sure to bring an outfit that represents your brand for Day 2, as you will be part of the styled shoot.

 

Day 1: Mastering Various Floral Design Styles

  • Introduction and social media
  • The process of booking a wedding
  • Project 1: Design a bridal bouquet 
    •  Demo designing a bride bouquet using our Curate recipe
    • Discuss speed, prep work, and processes to make designing efficient
    • Discuss our system of organization to ensure bouquets and arrangements do not get mixed up
    • Demo wiring ranunculus
    • Individual Activity – Using our recipe from Curate we will design a round style using a base of greenery
    • Show different wrapping styles for bouquet
    • Individual Activity – students to wrap their bouquets in their choice of style 
  • Branding and social media
  • Project 2: Design a Centerpiece
    • Demo/Activity – Together work step-by-step designing a Compote centerpiece using our curate recipe

 

Day 2: Crafting a Signature Style

  • Discussion on Processes for a successful wedding – Bride confirmation, staffing, pricing, venue visits 
  • Project 3: Design Aisle Markers
    • Demo designing a Ground style aisle arrangement using our Curate recipe
    • Discuss options for placing these (Aisle back, Aisle Hedge, Moving to reception and re-use at cake table, head table or other. Use of centrepieces as aisle hedge)
    • Discuss flower manipulation – Reflexing roses/Spinning Roses
    • Activity – Design your Own Aisle Arrangement
  • Project 4: Archway Installation
    • Demo designing a ‘cage’ arrangement 
    • Discuss placement and how to attach cages using zip ties, using multiple cages to create the shape you want
    • Discuss consistency of size and shape
    • Discuss using permanent botanicals as the base for an archway installation (zip tie holder and tool belt)
    • Activity – Have each person design their own cage arrangement to be attached to the archway to create a beautiful installation
  • Project 5: Design a Centerpiece (Speed Round)
    • Activity – Together, work step-by-step designing a low long-table centrepiece using our curate recipe (5 groups of 4 people working on 4 centrepieces)
    • Discuss working together as a team and making everything look the same even though different designers are working on it. 
    • Discuss how time management is the key to successful wedding design
  • Project 6: Set up Wedding Space
    • Activity – transport all flowers to the “wedding space” and place them 
    • Attach cages and smilax to the archway
    • Aisle markers placed as a hedge down the aisle
    • Compote centrepieces are placed on round tables
    • Low centrepieces are placed end to end on long table
    • Bride Bouquet #1 is brought to space
  • Project 7: Bridal Bouquet #2
    • Demo designing a loose and natural organic style bride bouquet using our curate recipe
    • Discuss flower manipulations (centers out of carns and quicksands, reflexing lisianthus)
    • Use Chicken wire egg as base for design
    • Discuss using no greenery in this design
    • Individual Activity – Using our recipe from Curate, we will design a loose and natural organic style bouquet, wrapped in a different way from your first bouquet

Travis Mills discovered her love for floral design at the young age of 14 while working part-time at a local flower shop in northern BC. Despite pursuing degrees in botany
and education, her passion for floral design persisted, and in 2007, led her to establish her own floral studio, Calyx Floral Design, in Red Deer, Alberta.

Sixteen years later, Calyx has evolved into one of Alberta’s premier flower studios, with an exceptional team of designers specializing in weddings and events. Travis and her team’s breathtaking designs have garnered recognition from numerous internationally renowned magazines.
